Liverpool's remote car control racers on track

13 May, 2009 11:45 AM
LIVERPOOL Radio Rally Cross Car Club's Iraking Avenue, Moorebank, clay circuit is venue for the NSW State Titles, starting tomorrow at 9am.

The four days of racing will continue until Sunday with the top 100 remote-control drivers from all states and territories competing.

Liverpool's two-time national and New Zealand champion Wayne Walker heads the local entrants, as well along with Kevin Lewis, Kim Yee and Theo Assa.

Club president John Lewis said it's a great coup to host the titles.

In August last year club members literally ripped up the old circuit building a new clay track in a matter of weeks in readiness by October to host the Far East Model Car Association titles the world championship of the sport.

From the fast lanes of remote control car racing to the sporting fields, Liverpool All Saints Rugby League Club are working on a blueprint from their Hillier Oval headquarters. This season senior grades in the Western Suburbs Junior Rugby League and Group 6 are playing in a combined competition. All Saints' third-grade team are second after five rounds. The Saints aim to expand in 2010, fielding first, second, third and under-18 teams.

Hillier Oval's new clubhouse and upgraded floodlighting provides better facilities for their teams and host night matches.

By entering more teams in the Group6/Wests' competition, more supporters boost gate takings and canteen revenues will help swell club coffers as visiting teams from Camden, Thirlmere, Narellan, Mittagong and Moss Vale and Picton would travel to play games here in Liverpool.

The Hard Yards reported a few months ago All Saints may enter a team in the NSW Rugby League's Bundaberg Red Cup 2010 competition. Submissions close in July but at this stage expanding teams in the local competition is the preferred option.

On the bowling greens, Austral's Rick Perry, 59, is going like a train.

The club stalwart has taken 18 years to achieve his latest feat and win the club's major singles title. Perry claimed the new crown mowing down Austral greenkeeper and State level player Tony White, 31-24, in the final. Perry had previously won Austral's club major pairs titles twice, the triples on six occasions and the fours' titles six times. The major singles gives Perry his version of a ``grand slam''.

And the Sydney Ice Dogs national hockey league team thrashed Penrith Bears, 6-1, on Saturday night at Liverpool Catholic Club.

Canadian import Jassi Sangha scored a hat-trick taking to his new team like a polar bear to the Arctic.
