BRAD Lowe's sporting life could have been much different. He was a hammer throw away from becoming an international athletics star.
Instead of hurling the hammer in major competition, however, he opted to drive motor racing cars at breakneck speed.
The Badgerys Creek resident took the punt and it's paying off. Lowe, 23, is now a rising star of motor sport.
He inherited the genes from his father, Brendan, a former topline modified racer in speedway.
Lowe said he had no regrets about ``changing lanes''. ``I finished fourth in a junior world athletics titles in hammer throwing,'' he said.
``I also competed in shot put, discus and javelin, but hammer throwing was my pet event. I grew up around motor sport, so it was a natural progression for me. I drove all sorts of cars when getting into motor sport. You name it, I have driven it.''
Lowe is learning the ropes as a driver in the Ford Falcon MW Motorsport team in the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Development series, which is one tier below the V8 Supercars.
In his rookie season, Lowe recently came fourth in the second round at Winton Raceway in Victoria, in only his third V8 Supercar race start.
He wants to move up a gear to the elite level.
``I want to be a part of V8 Supercars,'' he said.
What about conquering the mountain of the V8 Supercars at Mount Panorama, Bathurst?
``I have raced there in different classes in Aussie Legends and production cars but racing V8s there would be the ultimate.''
Away from the fast lanes of the track, Lowe works for his major sponsor, Haines Bros Earth Moving and Drainage.
