 Get the parking white!

Get the parking white!

Look, I know parking is a problem in Liverpool, but the WAY people park doesn’t help the cause at all.

This week the Liverpool Champion moved office from Moore Street to Castlereagh Street. I’m chuffed that we don’t have to pay for parking anymore, but having to get to work an extra half an hour early just to lap the streets stalking potential car-movers is a bit silly.

There’s not a lot we can do about the lack of parking unless there is a massive, free, underground car park built.

But, drivers of Liverpool, there is something we can do to make it just a little better for each other.

Next time you find a car space, think about parking in consideration for the people that want to squeeze in after you.

If you are near a driveway / end of parking area, park as close to the end as you can. DO NOT, like so many bozos around Liverpool, decide that if there is a nice wide open space, that you should selfishly park your car right smack bang in the middle of it.

By doing this, you are taking up two spaces. Only a smart car or a motorbike could possibly fit next to you. You are also, making me even later for work.

A colleague who used to work at Camden told me the council there decided to spray white lines on the road, so that cars had guidelines to park between. She said as soon as that happened, there was noticeably more parking in the area.

This is something I very seriously think Liverpool council needs to do.

Closer to the city, residents seem to know how to squeeze into car spaces, a little too well.

So-called ‘Jew Parking’ hit the headlines last year when some bratty private school kids in the eastern suburbs set up a facebook group called "The Jew Parking Appreciation Group". The group suggested that to park your car tightly in between two other cars is an art in Bellevue Hill, an affluent suburb where many Jews live, also inferring the parking is akin to the stereotype that Jews are ‘tight’ with their money.

The media found out, went to town on the group, and it was subsequently taken off the web.

So on one side of Sydney, we’ve got people parking across too many parks. On the other side, we’ve got people so desperate to park, that they are practically parking themselves in.

How many times have you driven around Sydney, asking yourself, ‘come on Sydney, when are you going to sort this parking problem out?’

Our traffic and parking problems in both Liverpool and greater Sydney frustrate me to no end. I know I could catch public transport instead, but I’ll save my problems with Sydney’s public transport for another blog.

Do you think Liverpool Council should paint white lines on the street for parking?

Do you have any great parking tips (go on, any secret spots around Castlereagh Street?)

How do you combat the parking shortage?

Taking it too far: So-called 'Jew Parking', that landed some private school students in hot water last year for their anti-sematic suggestion of a name for tight parking.
